VOLUNTEERS

Feed the Need in Durham relies on volunteers to assist the four staff members. They are an important part of our operation and we are very grateful for each and every person who shares their time and talents with us. There are two types of volunteer opportunities. Our office and warehouse are open Monday - Thursday from 8 - 5 pm and by appointment on Friday. Our regular volunteers assist during these times. Opportunities outside of regular hours are available during events.

There are a number of opportunities for members of the public to get involved no matter their age, physical limitations, ability level, etc. We try to match volunteers with work that is both meaningful for the volunteer and necessary for Feed the Need in Durham. Our regular volunteers help either in the warehouse or office. They get involved in the warehouse by sorting food, picking orders for agencies, driving truck or the forklift. Occasionally high school students assist in the warehouse to achieve their community service hours. Volunteers in the office help with reception, fundraising/communications, donor relations, data entry, research and general office duties. Our Board of Directors are volunteers and opportunities to be a member arise from time to time.

Besides our regular volunteers there are opportunities to get involved during fundraising, food drive or community awareness events. These usually take place on the weekends.

If you are interested in volunteering please print and complete the application form below (it may not be submitted electronically) and call Heather for information on the next Volunteer Orientation Session. These usually take place on Tuesday mornings at 9 am on a bi-weekly basis. We require our volunteers to acquire a Criminal Record Check and submit it with their application unless they are being referred by another agency or government office. For volunteers interested driving the truck we require a driver abstract and for those interested in driving the forklift we require a current forklift license.
