The Spirit of Giving
At this time of year our thoughts so often turn to those in need, and our proud history of giving in this community.
We are reminded of the incredible philanthropy of the McLaughlin Family – ranging from Sam McLaughlin’s impressive gifts of university buildings, art, planetariums and medical fellowships, to simple acts of kindness that touched individuals in need. His wife Adelaide helped to found organizations, such as Simcoe Hall Settlement House and the YWCA Durham which, along with Feed the Need in Durham, form a food distribution family.
Did you know?
The R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation disbursed $ 200 million over 50 years to innumerable causes in medical research, education, recreation and culture.
During the Great Depression the McLaughlins began their practice of sending holiday hampers to cheer friends and acquaintances, employees and those less fortunate in the community, containing turkey/ham, preserves, chocolate, fruits and nuts, and cigarettes (back then!).
After learning of the plight of two elderly sisters in the care of their nephew who left to fight overseas, Sam McLaughlin anonymously provided their food, clothing and other support throughout WWII.
Learn more about these stories on a holiday tour of Parkwood—and please bring a non-perishable food donation when you come!
