WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO
Feed the Need in Durham is the regional food distribution warehouse serving Durham Region. We provide food to emergency food providers such as food banks, soup kitchens, community service centres, shelters, drop-in centres, breakfast feeding programs, etc. To accomplish this we operate a 3600² ft. warehouse located near King Street and Townline Road in Oshawa.
We are a proud member of the Ontario Association of Food Banks and an Affiliate member of Food Banks Canada. As part of the national food sharing system we adhere to strict food safety guidelines. We also receive donated food from these organizations.
In addition to the non-perishable foods that most food banks hand out, we also handle large volumes of perishable foods (fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat) as a result of our large walk-in cooler and freezer. Emergency food providers have access to both perishable and non-perishable food from our warehouse which greatly enhances the nutrition available to the many clients they serve.
You may have seen our two trucks that pick up and deliver food across Durham Region. We assist over 40 agencies from Pickering in the west, to Bowmanville in the east, and as far north as Beaverton. On average we handle between 135,000 – 150,000 pounds of food per month that is distributed to an estimated 50,000+ people in Durham Region. If you are wondering what 150,000 pounds of food looks like, it is equivalent to a small grocery store.
